About

An Academic Advising Magazine

Question mark? Exclamation mark! Period.

Advisors see needs and find solutions. We listen to others' stories and connect them to their communities. Perhaps more than anything, we value learning and growth, throughout the various forms it can take. That's what we're doing with AAQ. This is a space for all those things, and whatever else you might bring with you.

Meet Matt Markin

Co-Editor

Matt Markin is the academic success coordinator and academic advisor at California State University, San Bernardino. Matt has worked in higher education for 20 years, with over 12 years in academic advising. Matt co-hosts the Adventures in Advising, Emerging Voices, and CSUSB Advising podcasts, as well as produces The Pickup Meeting with Brody and Kevin. He has held past positions in NACADA as region chair, region conference co-chair, and annual conference co-chair. He has also written for Academic Advising Today and was a co-editor on NACADA’s pocket guide, Advising is Forever: Sharing Stories to Ignite (or Reignite) Your Advising Spirit. Matt believes Top Gun: Maverick is a masterpiece film and that the Star Wars prequels are not as bad as we make them out to be.

Meet Ryan Scheckel

Co-Editor

Ryan has been in academic advising since 2002, working with students from exploratory to declared, first generation to legacy, and from fine arts to pre-health. He has served in leadership roles from on-campus to international, and his professional interests range from advising history, theory and philosophy, to the intersections between advising and higher education's larger purpose. Ryan was thrilled to join the Adventures in Advising Podcast as co-host in 2025, has written some things here and there, and loves traveling to meet folks from all around the world. A graduate of Texas Tech University, Ryan's areas of study include Human Development, Public Administration, Leadership, and Higher Education Administration. He, too, is a huge pop culture nerd and appreciates Matt's take on the Prequels.
